Evidence-based Applied Behavior Analysis therapy
individualized to your child’s needs.

What is ABA?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a well-established therapeutic approach that uses scientifically proven techniques to understand and improve behaviors. ABA focuses on teaching new skills, reinforcing positive behaviors, and reducing challenging behaviors by analyzing how the environment influences actions. The therapy is highly individualized, with custom interventions to address each child’s unique needs. ABA is widely recognized for its effectiveness, particularly for children with autism, and offers a compassionate, goal-oriented way to support your child’s growth and success. By using structured teaching methods, consistent reinforcement, and measurable goals, ABA helps children make meaningful progress in their development.

What skills do we teach?

  • It’s crucial for children to be able to express their thoughts, needs, and feelings effectively, as well as understand others. These skills include speaking, listening, understanding gestures, and using body language. Communication skills are essential for building relationships, participating in school, and navigating everyday life. They range from simple actions like eye contact to pointing to more complex tasks, such as having a conversation, sharing ideas, or explaining internal events. Developing strong communication skills allows children to connect with others, advocate for themselves, and fully participate in their social and educational environments.

Children can be taught to effectively communicate using verbal communication and/or Augmented and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices such as tablets with speech software or a Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) book.

  • These skills refer to a child’s ability to manage their emotions, behaviors, and reactions to different situations. Self-regulation skills help children stay calm, focused, and in control, even when they’re feeling upset, excited, or frustrated. Teaching them to manage impulses, wait patiently, following or tolerate changes in routines, tolerate “no,” and how to calm down after being upset replaces challenging behaviors such as tantrums, aggression, property destruction, and self-injury. These skills are crucial for social interactions, learning, and emotional well-being. Through consistent practice, support, and positive reinforcement, children can develop better self-awareness and control, which helps them navigate daily challenges and build stronger relationships with others.

  • To manage their everyday life independently, children need to learn how to complete the essential tasks and activities of daily living. This includes things like toileting, bathing, hair brushing, using utensils to eat, dressing, and toothbrushing. During ABA therapy, daily living tasks can be broken down into smaller steps and taught step-by-step so that children can learn how to complete these tasks with increasing independence. Mastering these skills helps children build confidence, improve their self-esteem, and develop a sense of responsibility.

As your child gets older, it’s important for them to learn how to clean up after themselves, make their own food, wash dishes, and clean their laundry so that they can function independently at home or prepare for group or independent living.

  • These are the foundational abilities that children need to succeed in more complex learning situations. These skills include things like paying attention, following simple instructions, remaining seated, and completing tasks independently. Essentially, learning readiness skills are the building blocks that help children transition smoothly into structured learning environments, like school. By developing these skills, children become more able to focus, engage with activities, and absorb new information, setting the state for more advanced learning and academic success. These skills are often taught through structured activities and positive reinforcement, helping children gain confidence in their ability to learn.

  • It is important for children to understand how to interact and communicate effectively with others in various social situations. These skills include things like sharing, taking turns, initiating and maintaining conversations, understanding social cues, and showing empathy. Social skills also involve knowing how to manage conflict, express emotions appropriately, and work in groups. For children, developing strong social skills is crucial for building friendships, succeeding in school, and feeling confident in social settings. In ABA therapy, children can learn and practice these skills in a supportive environment so that they can build positive relationships and navigate the world around them.

FAQs

  • A child’s progress in ABA therapy can vary widely depending on several factors, including their unique strengths, challenges, the consistency of therapy, and the goals being targeted. Each child is different, and the pace of progress may be influenced by things like the child’s prior experiences, how they respond to interventions, and the level of support they receive from family and caregivers. Because of these individual differences, there is no set timeline for progress, and it’s important to remember that every child develops at their own pace. ABA therapy is designed to be flexible and adaptable, ensuring that the approach evolves as the child’s needs and abilities change over time.

  • Most insurance companies cover ABA services through their set of in-network providers. Verify eligibility by calling your insurance company or logging on to their online patient portal to review your benefits.

  • At this time, Nurtured Roots ABA accepts members of North Carolina Medicaid and Vaya Health. Occasionally, other insurance providers will agree to pay for services for out-of-network providers if you meet their eligibility requirements. You can also opt to private pay if services are not covered by insurance.
